Do Your Part, Keep Singapore Safe!

DO YOUR PART, KEEP A LOOKOUT!

Picture Credit: Straits Times Online Mar 2, 2008
Remember one aspect of Total Defence is Civil Defence? You can now play your part by being vigilant Singaporeans, and helping to keep a lookout for escaped JI terrorist Mas Selamat Kastari. The above are possible disguise that Mas Selamat may take on to hide his identity.
Mas Selamat escaped from Whitley Detention Centre last Wednesday 26 Mar, 2008. He has been on the run since then and Singapore has started a nationwide hunt for him.
Kastari was accused of plotting to hijack a plane in order to crash it into Singapore's busy Changi Airport in 2001, but never charged in court. He was being held under an internal security law which allows for detention without trial.

Mas Selamat's escape from the Whitley Road Detention Centre shows that Singapore's security is questionable. It also shows that Singapore is not ready to keep a high-risk terrorist like him under full control. With the population alerted of his escape only a few hours later, it means that the security officers were not quick enough to make the news known to the public. When the police started checking all vehicles around the area, Mas Selamat had already gone far away. I wondered why the police did not send him to jail, and even if he was not guilty, why did they not put an electronic tag on him so that he would be caught no matter where he escapes? There is no reason why the police still believe that he is still in Singapore when Mas Selamat obviously has some accomplices to get him out of Singapore before the immigration officers heard of his escape. His escape costs Singapore a lot of resources searching for him and many parents are so worried that they do not allow their children to go to schools. As Singapore will be hosting the 2010 Youth Olympic Games, Mas Selamat might try to bomb the the stadiums and cause countless casualties and deaths and physical damages. Right now, Mas Selamat may be plotting a repeat of the Sept 11 attacks right here in Singapore. Oh, what a calamity that will be!

Reflection on Mas Selamat
After the terrorist,Mas Selamat, escaped from the Whitley Detention Centre after using the toilet last Wednesday 26March,2008,I was very angry that the the guards did not kept an eye on him. I think that the police should take extra precaution to keep a close watch on dangerous criminals. But how did he escaped from the toilet? Was it because there was an accomplice that Osama sent waiting for him there already?I also think that the police is giving very confusing details about Mas Selamat to help them find him. They wrote on the newspaper that he was limping but the next day they said that he would only limb if he is walking briskly or running. So,how can we spot him if he does not walk briskly or run?I think that the police will need to use all the help they need to track him down. Some people said that the police have to cooperate with other countires' police force in order to capture him as he may have already escaped out of Singapore. But if he did escaped, will our police learn to cooperate with international police forces?Or will Mas Selamat get to Osama in time and tell him the blueprints of Singapore's defences and plant a bomb? But,will Singapore capture the most smartest and hasn't been captured for many years terrorist?Or will we go quiet into the night? But some also say that maybe the government set him free on purpose?Who knows?

The detention centre was very careless, letting out a JI leader escape!!! Why do they still insist that he is still in Singapore? How can they be so sure??? He might have escaped to our neighbouring countries already! This escape must have been planned, and they are now currently in their secret hideout discussing plans to attack Singapore or any other countries.
This will definitely affect Singapore. If the country chosen to host the YOGs were chosen at a later date like after the escape of Mas Selamat, Singapore will not be even chosen.Singapore's good reputation is now over.Others will not trust us anymore. If Mas Selamat really attacks another country, we will have to take the blame. His escape has also caused one the worst traffic jams at Jurong in 14 years.
As a student,I will definitely dial the police if I see someone that resembles Mas Selamat- the infamous terrorist that has escaped twice out of jail and they still did not keep a tighter watch over him!And the news also said that if he walks briskly or runs, he will limp. That is all useless. He would not run or walk briskly for no reason!
If they can't catch him now, when will they nab him?

I feel unsafe that Mas Selamat is on the loose. We would never know when he would attack. He may be hiding in a canal or another deserted place in Singapore. As everyone knows, Singapore will be organising the Youth Olympics in the year 2010. Many people from other countries will be coming to Singapore to watch the Olympics. What if Mas Selamat attacks at that time? Those people may think that there are terrorists running loose in Singapore and Singapore is very dangerous. He may even hijack a plane and crash it into Changi Airport when the citizens from other countries arrive to watch the Youth Olympics! Mas Selamat may disguise himself as someone else. I think that the information that was given to us by the police is not enough. Many old people limp when they walk or run! I have been wondering how big the window which Mas Selamat escaped from is big enough for him to escape. What if he had an accomplice to help him in his escape and in his crimes? What if he was making a bomb and was preparing to use it now? We would never know. I think the police should post patrols all over Singapore and heighten the security of Singapore. I don’t think that he would hide any longer as long as people can identify him. He will not be able to buy any food if everybody can identify him well. I believe that if the police are efficient and can patrol for 24 hours, Mas Selamat would be caught soon. I feel sorry for his family for having a terrorist and a killer as a family member.

Mas selamat escaped!!!I think that the police are quite silly.he went to the toilet for so long ,but the police never even suspect him.He might have escaped out of Singapore by the time the police inform the custom. My father said that he will catch him if he sees him,but i think my father is crazy. He might have a knife with him.I really wonder what my father is thinking in his mind! Most of the people don’t read newspaper,so how could they know about this guy?The police put up the notice everywhere and say that he walks with a limp on his left leg.Its only when he walks briskly or when he runs.So how on earth are we going to catch him?People might make prank calls to the police.Sad,that Singapore have a person like him.Why must he do such things to his country where he grow up in?I wonder if his family is on his side?I think that a police might help him to escape.I hope that the polcie will catch him as soon as possible.

Mas Selamat's escape from the Detention Centre in Whitley is a huge disgrace to Singapore's security. This also shows that Singapore security sucks as we let a famous jail escaper go to a toilet without any security. It also shows the government is kinda stupid as they let the most wanted man is Singapore be put in a lousy detention centre instead of a high security jail. They are also kinda useless and dumb as they made news public only after 4 hours of his escape. In that 4 hours he might have took a boat to Batam and then escape to Jakarta where Jemaah Islamiyah base is.This is also super embarassing as in ads sg policemen can catch a running suspect while now they can't even catch a limping man. They are also kinda unreliable as they give wrong info that his limping leg will be obvious,2 days later, they said we all can only view his limping leg when he's running or walkin briskly. For all we know,he might be plotting to bomb us during our youth olympics and kill thousands of innocent life if we dun catch him soon.He is after all very cruel and ruthless as only someone with this sort of qualities will be handpicked by Hambali, their leader. He might even ask Osama to bomb us.The police should also give him a reward of at least 5 to 10 mil as he is dangerous and it would be tempting to foreign workers to search for him.

Where is he now?
How he escaped?
Will he be at the streets or forested areas?
These are questions many people are waiting for them to be answered. I wonder how will he survive unless he hunts or steals. The police are all around Singapore searching for Mas Selamat, but they cannot do this alone without the help of Singaporeans. Singapore may be small as it seems, but I think that it is actually quite big when you are looking for one person in a small country.
This issue may cause tourists to stay away from Singapore for this period of time. And also, our security in Singapore is very tight, but it is a wonder that Mas Selamat can escape through the guards. He could have analyse the security system and thought of a way to escape.
As the police believed that he had no money and food, I think he would resort to stealing. He could have a gang helping him to survive for the past few days by buying him food and clothes.
My questions about this issue are "Why did he want to plot to hijack a plane and crash into Changi Airport?" "What will he benefit from the crash?" He could have lost his life for that. I hope he will turn himself in and explain why he wanted to do that. I also hope that he won't harm us at all.

I wonder what will the goverment do after Mas Selamat escape for so many days? Will they send more men to protect the country? I guess Mas Salamat escape has something to do with the prison guard. Think he has fled to Malaysia and prepare for the plan. Singapore is such a small country and it takes just a couple of hours to leave her after the escape. I wonder if in a few years, Mas Salamat really done his job and hijack a plane and crash into Changi Airport? Lots of aeroplanes will stop coming to Singapore and Singapore will lose of tourists. What will Singapore actually be after the crash of Changi Airport? I think the goverment should send some planes in the air and look for any hijack planes. Or maybe Singapore should take a piece of land and build another airport just in case Changi Airport being crashed. I suggest that the goverment should not put the army officers on the road but concentrate on the air. I suggest that the goverment should put at least one army officer in each plane coming to Singapore( even though it is a stupid idea ). Singapore should be a peaceful country, not a life-threatening country. The goverment should also put the prison high security and no chance of escaping. So, Mas Salamat captured is very important for everyone in Singapore.

MAs Selamat Bin Kastari has escaped from Whitely Detention Centre on Tuesday. Why did the police belevied him that he really needed to go to the toilet? Why did they put him in the detention centre but not throw him to the jail? After our class discussed about Mas Selamat,i beleived that he was out of Singapore as the 4 hours before the news was announced to the public he would have taken a boat to other country but after thinking about what she said, i think that he may be still in Singapore. He went to Afganistan for training to living in forest. With his skills i think he could have survived for more then 100 hrs.Did he go with Osama and the JI team? The answer will only come out when Singapore catch Mas Selamat. Hope Singapore can catch him soon!

Even if you did not read the news, see the newspaper, you should know that mas selamat had escape from the prison."how did he escape?where did he go?is he still in singapore?"these questions came to my mind.i think that he had bribed some of the police officers.not one,but some.if he had only bribed one of them,he could not have escape so easily.i think that he had already gone overseas.

as he is a dangerous man, police can be seen patroling in some places.we could easily spot him as he is short and had a limping leg.but you can only see his limping leg when he rans or walk briskly.the police were know that he might disguise into some other people so,they had many pictures of hims as a lady, with a cap and sunglasses.the police pasted pictures of mas selamat around,on busses besides the lift and on the notice board.they even sent his pictures to other people's handphone.

Mas Selamat is a criminal that once planned to crash a hijacked plane into Singapore Changi Airport. His plot was discovered and was arrested, but a few days ago , he escaped and is now on the loose. There are some things that are puzzling to me.Why only after a few hours then the police took action? Why are they still looking in Singapore after so long? Are some people working in the detention center in cahoots with him?Did the government set him free after they made a deal on something but did not want the public to know?

In my opinion,I think that Mas Selamat has already fled to another country as Singapore is such a small country. But the police has yet been able to find him yet.I also think that even before he planned to destroy Singapore Changi Airport,he would have already thought of how he should escape if he was arrested. Then, the would have fled very easily.I really hope that this would not affect Singapore's economy and reputation.I hope he would be arrested as soon as possible.

The news of Mas Selamat escaping is horrible. Now knowing that a terrorist is on the run, other countries are now in danger as well. Mas Selamat probably put the Singapore government in sweat, cause the JI was not meant for those under detention to sneak out just like that. Ocasionally, I used to think of Mas Selamat as a terrible person, but it may not turn out to become what I think it is...

Meanwhile though, I imagined what it would be like if the government set up an extra sentence in the posters saying a reward would be awarded to those that brought the police to Mas Selamat. Mostly, everyone would be in search of the escapist with brooms, mops, choppers, and knives in their hands going after Selamat. But neverthe less, I think Singapore should step up on their security and not let everyone be thrown into anxiety again.

Mas Selamat is quite daring to actually try to attack our Singapore Changi Airport by hijacking a plane. However, to me, being sent to detention is not enough for a super terrorist. He should be sent to jail instead.
Mas Selamat's escape can tell us two things: Its either that Mas Selamat is such a terrorist to escape unharmed or that Singapore's security is so bad.
In my opinion, when the news that Mas Selamat has escaped had just been reported, he had defiately already escaped from Singapore. He definately took the route through the Strait of Johor and escaped to Malaysia, which is our closest neighbour to us.
Safety in Singapore is very important.Mas Selamat might attack us soon if we do not find him quickly. It is a big job, but together, we can track him down and keep Singapore a safe place!

After the terrorist,Mas Selamat had escaped from the detention centre, I felt scared and unsafed. It was chaos as everyone feared about the disappearance of the terrorist. The police said not to worry but my mind is filled with thoughts. Who knows what he would do. What if Mas Selamat was carrying a bomb and decided to blow Singapore up with a press of a button? What if he had a secret organisation and plans to assinate the goverments? Or kidnapped People and demand a ransom for the return of the innocents or kill them? But still, I have faith in the police and the army that they will protect the citizens and find the terrorist and put him behind bars once and for all.We must do their part and find him and report anything that is related to this incident before it is too late and hope for a better future.

Dear Miss Ang,

This is my reflection about Mas Selamat.

Mas Selamat has been a threat to everyone ever since he escaped from prison. Posters had been put up in buses, voidecks and even by hand phones. Is he very dangerous? I always think. How could we feel safe when Mas Selamat may be finding his terrorist friends to take revenge on us. Furthermore, How could a limp man escaped from prison? Is our country safe? He could maybe had gone to other countries between the four hours when the police didn’t found out he had escaped. Even if we spotted him and called the police, will the police be able to catch up with him? Its all a mystery. Maybe if Mas Selamat had not escaped, this will not happened. People always say that Singapore is very small, but why it is so hard to find Mas Selamat?

I really hope he could be found sooner so our country would have peace again.

Thank you,

Fabriana.

Mas Selamat

I think that Mas Selamat has already escaped from Singapore. He may be in our neighbour country,Malaysia. He may also be in Indonesia.I think that he would most probably be in Indonesia as he was born there.I do not understand why he wanted to bomb Changi Airport or hijack the plane. Is he dead or alive?Who knows.Maybe the policeman delibrately let him out,but why does he want to do that? What if Mas Selamat bribe the policeman to let him out? This is a serious offence,if it is true, and the policeman get caught? It would be so terrible. If he is still in Singapore, why the police have not caught him yet?Maybe he is in disguise, sleeping under a bridge,so that the police could not find him.Even Mas Selamat had gone for a plastic surgery,it would be impossible. The beauticians there would recognise him.People may have seen him after he escaped, but did not regconised him as they did not read the papers.Would he be out, killing people? No one knows.I hope that the police would find him soon.Until Mas Selamat have been caught, our lives would still be in danger. When mas Selamat is still in prison, the police should have send more men to guard his cell.Does he hate Singa[pore? If not,why does he want to do all this things to Singapore? These questions still have not been answered.Let us pray hard that Mas Selamat would be caught soon!! =]

Mas Selamat Escape!!!
It was shocking to hear that there is a detention escape happening in Singapore. I think it is immpossible that a person can escape from the detention cantre. Unless,he has accommplices and i thik one of them is actually a police as the police can help him to escape safelly. It was also something weird that no one noticed him only after 5 hours.but if mas selamat has the ability to let a police help him to escape, i think he has already planned how to escape. maybe what time to escape.
But if i am mas selamat i will quickly use the 5 hours to run out of the country. As if i still stay in Singapore i will be spotted easily. Unless i stay at home and do not go out.
If i am 1 of the police i would quickly question the prisonners and ask if anyone was his accomplice. It is alsovery important to find out mas selamat quickly. As it will be dangerous for everyone. As mas Selamt maybe is already planning where to bomb next. If mas selamt really bomb one of the countrys singapore would really be in trouble. All the police officres who is working on that time will surely be held responsibility. If someone one of our family is hurt by him i will blame it al on the police.

Reflection on Mas Selamat

I think Mas Selamat had someone helping him to escape by preparing food, water and transport. I think he immediately drove to Malaysia. Yet the police are still concentrating their efforts in Singapore when he could already be somewhere in Kuala Lumpur or even in Indonesia.

They should expand their patrolling area to cover more grounds. They should also seek assistance from their counterparts is in Malaysia, Indonesia or even Thailand to help patrol the waters and coastal areas.

If Mas Selamat is still on the run in Singapore, I think he would have to find shelter or food. In addition, he may be disguising himself to move around the crowd. He could also try and leave Singapore by boarding an aeroplane or even hijack one. This option would be very difficult or almost impossible as the security at the immigration and airport would be on high alert.

If the police were to try and contain him in Singapore, they would have to monitor 100% all flights both in and out of the country or maybe even seal up the immigration counters. These actions would also include the checkpoints at Tuas and Woodlands and the various ferry terminals. Such drastic measures would cause tremendous inconvenience or to the public and affect the business, If Mas Selamat is still in hiding somewhere in Singapore, he would most likely be unable to have showered for the last 4 days and should be quite smelly.

I felt that the police should have informed the public immediately after they discovered the breakout instead of waiting several hours. The government should also have stepped up the security levels around the detention centres especially when if inmates are such high security threats to the country

If I saw him walking, I would take out my hand-phone and inform the police about his whereabouts immediately. I do hope that the security forces find Mas Selamat soon and take his escape to review the procedures and not take this incident lightly.

I think that Mas Selamat's is not due to the officer's carelessness. I think Mas Selemat has accomplice in the detention centre or else how he escape. It has been so long and no one had caught him. I wondered where he is now. Is he still in Singapore? Or is he in other country now? If he is still in Singapore but why no one saw him? Police said that we can see him limping when he is walking briskly. But if he knew people can identify him when he is walking briskly so he would not walk briskly and how r we able to catch him? If he is out of Singapore but how he escape out of Singapore? Maybe Osama sent boat to fetch him? Will he bomb Singapore again or will he bomb other country?
i hope the police can catch him as soon as possible!

I think he is at the neighbouring countries.Ican't believe he was able to escape after lots of cases that prisoner escape through the toilet.I think it is due to the carelessness of the police.Their carelessness make our lives inconvienience.I think mas selamat could have bribethe police to allow him to escape or he could have accpmplice working there, therefore,he was able to escape. Our lives are also in danger.he could have been planning to bomb somewhere now.Lots of people are making fun of him.they create games, joke and etc.I hope everybody will not take his case lightly. I was shock to hear that people even make blogs about him.I visited the website and they were all about the laters news about him.I hope the police will quickly catch him so as to save our worries that he might bomb Singapore again.
