Commemoration of Total Defence Day (TDD) 2008

I'm sure all of you have known by now (if you don't yet, something is SERIOUSLY wrong with you), TDD is commemorated by schools on 15 February of every year. I'm also sure that all of you know the 5 areas of Total Defence (again, if you don't yet know, something is SERIOUSLY SERIOUSLY wrong with you), being:

1) Economic
2) Military
3) Civil
4) Psychological
5) Social Defence

A little bit of history: 15 February marks the day Singapore fell into the hands of the Japanese in 1942. The idea of Total Defence was only introduced to us in 1984, and we had adopted this idea from the experience in Sweden and Switzerland.

There are 2 reasons why the idea of a "TOTAL" Defence:

1) As a young nation with a small population, we cannot afford to maintain a regular armed force. As such, we need to involved every Singaporean in the effort of defence.

2) The nature of warfare is no longer simply about guns and tankers in a battlefield. Potential danger can strike in many other non-battlefield ways, e.g. suicide bombing in the city or residential area.

***********************************************************************************

The theme for this year's TDD is "Total Defence. It's Personal. Play Your Part." As such, the teachers deemed it appropriate that everyone in Maha Bodhi School plays our part particularly on this day to commemorate TDD in true, blue Maha Bodhi fashion. It doesn't matter whether you're a new P1 student or a graduating P6 student; whether you're a new teacher or an experienced teacher - we all have a part to play!!

Thus we began the week with a Total Defence Skit performed by the Discovery Centre. This was followed a 2-hour long water abstinence exercise for the morning session (1 hour for the afternoon session juniors) on 15 February, as well as the porridge-taking exercise on the very same day:

Your task is to answer the following questions:
1) Why did we practice water abstinence and porridge-taking exercise on TDD? (The answer has already ben hinted in earlier paragraphs. You may also find the answer in the circular given to your parents before TDD.)
2) How did you feel about the water abstinence exercise (DO NOT just tell me things like "I felt thirsty") and the porridge-taking exercise? How do you relate these two activities to your role in Total Defence?

Again, leave your answers in the comments column and I will look through them before i publish them :)
p.s. If you're interested to find out more about TDD, you may surf the following website: www.totaldefence.org.sg/

We practice water abstinence and porridge-taking exercise as war may strike at any place , any time.there may be war the next 10 years, the next five year or even this year!if we are not prepared, how can we win the war?

i think that the excercise is good as when there is war the enemy might stop our water supply and if we cannot stop drinking water for two hours, how can we stop drinking waters for days?and when war strike, food may be lesser and so we could not affort to eat rice everyday but maybe porridge or even nothing!!

1)To let us know how it was like when singapore came under the japanese rule.

2)I felt that it was useful even though I dont really enjoyed but it made me realise how those people that suffered under the japanese rule felt.Overall,it was good that the school held this exercise.

1) We had to experience how people felt when there was no food and water during the war. We also had to experience how hungry and thirsty the people felt during the war. Then, we will learn that we should be grateful for what we have today, thus, learning not to waste precious food and water.

2) The water abstinence made me feel grateful that i have water today. Not like people during the war, when there were no water. Same goes to the porridge. Now, i know how precious food and water is and will not waste any of it in future.

1)we do that because to know why water and food are so precious.we also have a chance to know how people in the war feel.

2)i felt that there are a lot of people who are very unfortunate in the world.(like those in the war)they do not have water to drink.in this water abstinence excercise,we have a chance to understand how the poor feel.as for the porridge-taking excercise,we can also understand how the poor, unfortunate feel.(also those in the war)if they do not have any food to eat except for porridge, they will still eat it.it helps us know how the people in the war survive.

We praticed water abstinenceis to enable us to experience what it is like to face water shortage and to reinforce the fact that water is a precious commodity.

The porridge-taking exercise enables us to also experience what it is like to face a shortage of food.

Well, after both of the exercises, It made me feel how it is like when there is a global terrorism or SARS.We should all appreciate that Singapore is a nice and wonderful country and everybody is living in peace.

1)To let us feel how miserable it was during the Japanese occupation in 1942.

2)I felt that the water abstinence exercise is good for us as if anytime our water supply gets cut off,we will be prepared. And for the porridge-taking exercise,it is fine but i think we they should give us only food that we can grow on our own as during war,we may not even be able to buy rice but we can grow our own food.

1)We practiced these exercices to let us know and feel what it is like during a real war or when we have less food resources.

2)I felt lucky to have at least some food. Not many of us have food as there is not much of it to give out and many will starve from hunger and the lack of nutrition. We should be grateful that there is no war and learn to conserve our food and not waste it.

It let us feel how our forefathers undergo during the japanese occupation. It also let us appreciate water and food.

1) We practice water abstinence to allow us to experience the shortage of water and what is like not being able to drink water when you are feeling thirsty.

2)

Water abstinence exercise:

I felt thirsty for a while until I tried to stop looking at my friend's water bottle, looking at it makes me feel that I was in a desert.

Porridge-taking exercise:

The porridge-taking exercise teaches me that during the war, you had no choice but to eat the only available food for you, regardless whether it is delicious or not.

We practise porridge taking and water abstinence to experience what it feels like to suffer in war and be prepared. There might be war happening in a few years (started by crazy people)commerate the 100 anniversery of world war 1 and appreciate and be grateful to what we have now. The tho events mde me realise that we are very fortunate. It made me feel and experience a small part of how much people suffer under the Japanese.I have decided to appreciate water and do not waste food.

1)We pratice the WATER ABSTINENCE EXERCISE because it enables us to experience what it is like to face water shortage and to reinforce the fact that water is a precious commodity.

We pratice the FOOD RATIONING EXERCISE because it enables us to experience what it is to face a shortage of food.

2)I felt quite ok for the water abstinence exercise because i don't drink much water!I think the food rationing exercise was quite ok too as I am used to eating porridge!:))

The exercise let me realise thst food and water are very precious and it encourage a sense of empathy for the survivors of a war.

1)We practice it to know how it is like to have no water and have very little food because There might be a war anytime now.

2)I did not feel anything much because I usually do not drink much water before recess. The porridge-taking exercise teaches me to appreciate when I have it.

This exercise was to let singaporeans experience what was it like in the period of japenese occupation, thats when singapore fell into the hands of the japanese in the 1940s. People then had only porridge for food. No water was allowed.

It felt like a prison to me. I always have 8 glasses of water per day. That explains why I felt so terrible. Water is important for health and I guess that people back then were having a miserable life as water is not allowed. I have then learned that we should conserve water and food, instead of wasting them. To us, a tiny drop of water is no big deal. To the people back in the 1940s, it was very valuable. People might even fight over the 1cm3 of water.

We practise water abstinence and porridge-taking exercise on TDD to have an experience of what will be happening exactly during a war or post-war periods due to shortage of food and water as supplies would be cut off. For example, in 1942-1945 when the Japanese invaded Singapore and the trading entreport was disrupted.
Through the water abstinence exercise and the porridge-taking exercise,i felt that we are much fortunate than what the people actually went through during the japanese times.I have learnt that water and food is very precious and we should not waste them.

We practise porridge taking and water abstinence to feel what is it like to suffer in war only with a bottle of mineral water and a bowl of porridge for once a day. People in our generation do not appreciate such things .If we all go war in this state , we will be conquered in like 1 week time. After such experience, i will apperciate for even a grain of rice .

We practice water abstinence to experience what people felt during the Japanese occupation. It also tells us to be always prepared. It makes me feel lucky to be here.I will not waste food and water again.

1) We should practice water abstinence and porridge cooking exercises as we have to prepare and train ourselves in case of war.It is also to know the sufferings of singaporeans in those days.
2)I think that we should practice this excercise as to learn that water and food are precious. I felt that it was a good experience and i hope that they would continue doing this in secondary school.

1)It is to let us experience life during the war.
2)The water abstinence and porridge taking-exercise makes me feel that how hungry it is when there is a shortage of food and water and we are only given a small amount of food and no water at all.

1) The Water Abstinence and porridge-taking exercise is to make us experience what our forefathers went through so that we will appreciate what we have. It also makes us be prepare for the war, just in case. It teaches us not to waste food and water and food.

2) It is quite fun and interesting. The exercises are the activities that the Total Defence Day have. Total Defence Day(TDD) falls on 15 February which the day Singapore fell into the hands of the Japanese in 1942. The exercises can make us prepare for any disaters( like in 1986, Hotel New World collapse ). The exercise let me learn how to survive under this condition.

i think this exercise is very good as it helps to remind us on future wars (if any) . so if we practice this regularly. we might know what to prepare if war strikes. we practice water abstinence and eat porridge to feel what it is like to suffer during the war. it helps us to cherish our food and water. and also teaches us not to waste food that is available to you .CHERISH YOUR FOOD AND WATER ((:

1) We practise ware abstinence and porridge-taking exercise to let us experience what it felt like during the war when the japanese attacked Singapore. 2) I felt that although the water abstinence exercise only lasted for 2 hours,it teaches us to cherish it and not to waste it.i also felt that we are lucky to have what we have now.

1) We practice water abstinence and porridge-taking exercise because we take for granted how much food we have everyday to fill our stomach. This exercise helps us to realize how fortunate we are compared to other countries like Indonesia.

2) I think the exercise is useful as it help us to know what it is like when there is war. As the enemy might strike our food and water supply and we will not have enough water and food for everyone. I feel grateful to be born in Singapore where there is no war and has plenty of food and water.

1) We practice water abstinence and porridge-taking in order we'll be prepared in time of war.It also help us to appericate what we have today and not take things for granted. It teaches us not to waste water and food.

2)I think these exercise is very useful to our daily life.If there is a war(i hope there isn't), we would know what to do.Ex: Do not panick when there is no water or enough food. And other more.I feel grateful to be born in Singapore even though i am not a Singaporean.

1) We practised water abstinence and porridge-taking exercise on total defence day to feel how people in war feel they eat these things.
2)i think that the exercises let me feel how hard it is to eat so less and do not drink water.it is worst for the people in war as they have lesser food than we do.duribg the day.
